The cottage
Built in the late 1700s, Tamarisk Cottage is one of only a few original flint cottages left in East Wittering. It has been in the family since 1975: a two-up, two-down farm worker’s cottage, extended in the mid-1970s and refurbished in 2021, with the old walls and character kept.
The cottage retains its original layout; two upstairs bedrooms with the bathroom and a separate loo downstairs in the later rooms. The stair rises from the old scullery, now the dining room: steep, narrow, and part of the cottage.
Bedrooms, kitchen, garden
Sleeps four: the front room has a super-king that can split into two singles; the back bedroom has a standard double. There is a travel cot for infants.
The kitchen is small and complete — fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, cooker, microwave — with a seating area that opens onto the garden. The original front room keeps an open fireplace.
The south-facing garden is full of flowers in summer. Help yourself to herbs and vegetables. Children have a mud kitchen and a bug hotel, and there is room to play. The garden is enclosed, so it is a good place to leave bikes or surfboards. Off-street parking at the front for two cars, or three if you squash them in.
Village and beach
Shore Road sits in the middle of the village. Greengrocers, bakers, butchers and a fish shop are a couple of minutes’ walk, with Tesco and the Co-op if you need them. Opposite is Ground. — great coffee, cakes and food. The Boulevard Café, across the road, does breakfast and fish and chips. The beach is 250m south, at the end of the road: sand and shingle once the tide goes out, and no lifeguard. We do not provide beach towels.
Chichester is close, and Goodwood is a short drive for racing, motorsport, or a day out. Cottage sockets are not for charging a car; there is a public charger behind Tesco in the village.
An original two-up, two-down: bedrooms upstairs, bathroom and separate loo downstairs. The staircase is steep and narrow.
