About the cottage

Built in the late 1700s, Tamarisk Cottage is one of only a few original flint cottages left in East Wittering. It has been in our family since 1975. An original two-up, two-down farm worker’s cottage, it was extended in the mid-1970s and completely renovated and refurbished in 2021, keeping many of the original features.

You sleep upstairs: a standard double at the back, and a front room that can be a super-king or two singles. There is no ensuite. The bathroom — a shower bath — and a separate loo are downstairs in the later part of the house, with the kitchen and a family sitting area that leads into the garden.

The original front room has an open fireplace with an electric fire. The smaller old scullery is the dining room, and the stair goes up from there — steep and narrow, as you would expect in a flint cottage of this age. There are photographs of the stair in the Gallery. Gates sit at the top and bottom if you want them; take care on the stair.

The garden faces south. In summer it is full of flowers, and visitors are welcome to help themselves to herbs and vegetables. There is space for children to play, a mud kitchen, and a bug hotel. The garden is enclosed, so it is a good place to leave bikes or surfboards. In high summer the village is busy; the garden is a quiet place to come back to. Off-street parking at the front takes two cars, or three if you squash them in.

Children are welcome. We can put out a travel cot, a high chair, and stair gates. Please bring your own bedding for a little one. We have a strict no-pets rule, including the garden: it is a family house with soft furnishings and a garden meant for children. Smoking and vaping are for the garden only — not indoors.
